Position Types
There are two types of student appointments at PNNL: interns and research associates. Interns are currently enrolled students seeking a degree, and research associates are recent college graduates who work full-time at the Laboratory for an extended period of time (possibly up to 2 or 3 years depending on the position).
Intern Levels
Technical Interns
These positions are for candidates who are currently enrolled in a science or engineering, or related bachelor's degree program at an accredited university at time of application. All technical interns must have at least a 2.5-4.0 GPA and be enrolled in at least six credits per term at the time of application and during their intership to be eligible. Technical interns are paid an hourly wage and may be employed for up to 18 months per academic level (sophomore, junior, etc.).
Business Interns
These positions are for candidates who are currently enrolled in a business or related bachelor's degree program at an accredited university at time of application. All business interns must have at least a 2.5-4.0 GPA and be enrolled in at least six credits per term at the time of application and during their internship to be eligible. Business Interns are paid an hourly wage and may be employed for up to 18 months per academic level (sophomore, junior, etc.).
Master's and Ph.D. Interns
These positions are for candidates who will are currently enrolled in a science or engineering or related master's or Ph.D. degree program at an accredited university at time of application. All master's interns must have at least a 3.0-4.0 GPA and be enrolled in at least six credits at time of application, or be completing thesis work to be eligible. Master's and Ph.D. Interns are paid an hourly wage and may be employed for up to 3 years to 5 years, respectively.
Research Associate Levels
Post-Bachelor's Research Associate
These positions are for candidates who have graduated with their bachelor's degree in a technical field related to the position, within the last 18 months. Positions may range from six months to two years. All post-bachelor's research associates will be paid a monthly salary. Some positions may also include medical and dental benefits and/or paid relocation.
Post-Master's Research Associate
These positions are for candidates who have graduated with their master's degree in a technical field related to the position, within the last two years. Positions may range from six months to two years. All post-master's research associates will be paid a monthly salary. Some positions may also include medical and dental benefits and/or paid relocation.
Post-Doctorate Research Associates
These positions are for candidates who have graduated with their Ph.D. degree in a technical field related to the position, within the last five years. Positions may range from six months to three years. All post-doctorate research associates will be paid a monthly salary. Some positions may also include medical and dental benefits and/or paid relocation.
